paper lantern

A traditional Japanese or Chinese lantern made of thin, brightly colored paper.

There are several basic types:

• Chouchin (提灯), a traditional Chinese cylindrical paper lantern.
• Kami dourou (紙灯籠), a traditional square-shaped floating water lantern used in mourning ceremonies.
• Tourou (灯籠), a generic term for traditional Japanese lanterns, including paper and stone lanterns.
