It starts as a dating sim, before switching the story's perspective towards an alternate universe where Earth has been devastated by an alien invasion. The first game is split into two parts, the first part (MuvLuv Extra) is a high school romcom, while the second part (MuvLuv Unlimited) introduces the science fiction and military focused alternate universe.
A manga adaptation of Extra illustrated by Takao Ukyou and an adaptation of Unlimited illustrated by Hirokawa Tomo were both released between 2004 and 2007.
