Christ the Redeemer (Portuguese: Cristo Redentor) is a 30-meter-high concrete Art Deco statue of Christ that stands atop the Brazilian mountain Corcovado, overlooking the city of Rio de Janeiro.
Christ the Redeemer's distinctive look and dramatic setting have made it an icon of the city since its completion in 1931. An artist wanting to establish that an image involves Rio has only to include it in the background somewhere, in much the same way that, for instance, the Eiffel Tower instantly evokes Paris, or the Statue of Liberty does New York.
