AIBooru

Change status:deleted -> status:graveyarded

Posted under Bugs & Features

The term ‘deleted’ is misleading for uploads that are still on the site and visible to everyone. Booru is similar to osu!, a free-to-play game, in how it handles user-submitted content.

Both systems have ‘approved’ and ‘pending’ statuses for uploads that meet the standards or are waiting for review.

osu! has ‘graveyarded’, which means an upload that has been inactive for 30 days and can be restored by the user. Booru’s ‘deleted’ status is the same, except ‘deleted’ implies the upload is gone forever. This is not true, as ‘deleted’ uploads can be revived, and viewed at any time, which is not something you should be able to do with uploads that have been "deleted", to say.

AIBooru can automatically ‘graveyard’ uploads after 3 days of disapproval or inactivity, or manually by approvers and higher-ups. If they are not really deleted and can be brought back, they should be called ‘graveyarded’ instead of ‘deleted’.

I agree that it is a source of confusion, multiple new users asked me personally about it and I couldn't understand the post statuses myself. The thing is though, this term is used both throughout the code and the contents of the page, so changing it would probably be impractical.

The more feasible option would be to hide the deleted uploads from users so they seem deleted, but that would be a problem because there would be no way to appeal the. So the only solution I see is adding a description when searching for status:deleted; linking status wiki to the status description in a single post; and adding a short explanation to the uploads page that uploaded images will stay on the site (optionally linking to status wiki).

... wait, do we even have a wiki explaining statuses? I can't seem to find it now. The front page of the wiki definitely needs some work.

You're onto something. What if "deleted" uploads were only visible to their respective uploaders and all of the users with approver+ status or higher? I think this could make it better, so that the OP (original poster) can still appeal, but as long as it's not 'pending' or 'active', it's not visible to anybody but the OP and approvers.
